Jake Johnson, the New Girl co-star, on what he’s drinking, what he’s grilling, and why he’s totally not sharing his dinner.
Do you consider yourself a good cook?
I’m very good on a grill. I’m very medium when it comes to cooking.
Favorite thing to grill?
I like grilling salmon, shrimp, chicken, burgers, vegetables on skewers—everything. The best thing to do is grill and eat outside.
Classic rock music. If you listen to Bob Seger while you’re grilling, he will inform your body of when to turn the meat.
What are you drinking when you grill?
I love making drinks in the summer. You get fresh oranges—or my buddy will come by with fruit from his garden—and you mix the fruit with vodka.
Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
“I got hooked on La Croix [sparkling water] and I drink—not kidding—probably six a day.”
You used to be a bartender. Least favorite drink to make?
I never liked making mojitos. Just seemed like a lot of work. My favorite drink to make was pouring a draft beer.
Any tricks for getting the bartender’s attention?
Like hold it in your hand?
With your money ready and out there, it gives me the feeling this person knows what they want.
Last thing you ate?
Eggs and turkey bacon for a late breakfast with some coffee.
Pretty healthy. Is that typical for you?
I grew up across the street from a McDonald’s, so I had McDonald’s every day for years. In the last couple of years, I’ve made a lot of changes, so at this point I do eat pretty healthy.
What prompted the changes?
Somewhere around my mid 30s, it started feeling like the body was falling apart a little faster than I liked and it scared me.
Is it true you lost 15 pounds for New Girl?
How’d you do it?
I drank less beer and I ate less carbs.
Now that you’re on a healthier regimen, do you miss McDonald’s?
Every day. Junk food tastes the best to me.

Finish this sentence: I cannot control myself around…
Sweets. Any kind of M&Ms, cookies, any kind of dessert. I don’t have them in the house because I can’t stop eating them.
How does your wife feel about them not being in the house?
She does hide stuff from time to time. Every once in a while I’ll see her eating something that I won’t know has been in our house.
Any idea where the hiding spots are?
No, she’s crafty. If I know something’s there, I’ll wake up in the middle of the night to eat it.
Most unusual item in your refrigerator?
Goat milk. My wife likes goat milk in her coffee.
No. I think it’s so gross.
Greatest food city?
New Orleans. I like the crawfish po’boys down there. A deep-fried sandwich—so good.
Pet peeves about eating out?
I don’t like shared tables. I don’t like restaurants where everything’s so close you can hear what other people are saying. I also don’t like small plates.
What’s wrong with small plates?
What I really like is finding the meal I’m going to eat and diving in deep. Small plates are like speed dating. There’s a bunch of options. I want to go on a date with somebody, spend the night, and see what we think rather than go out with 16 people.
You want to order something you’ll love. Do you ask the server questions?
Never. When I used to be a server, I hated when people would ask me. What I like has zero relevance to what you’re going to like. But I’m a big plate-starer, so when I’m walking to my seat I’ll just stare at a lot of plates out there and see what looks really good.
What were childhood dinners like?
A mix of McDonald’s and my mom’s home cooking. My mom’s a phenomenal chef. She made really good hearty food.
Dish you miss most?
Her beef stroganoff. It’s my favorite.
You can be reincarnated as one food. What would it be?
An avocado tree, because I’ll live for a long time, my face will be very solid, and I’ll live in good weather—probably Southern California.
